Rules of Sentence Correction – GMAT Verbal Class Part-3

V) SC – COMPARISONS

Comparison Indicators : Like , unlike , as…as, than, more than,as much as, less than, as little as ,faster than, as fast as , different from, in contrast to/with , the same as ,etc 

Rule 1 : Compare things that are logically similar.

Usage : 

  • The population of China is more than that of India .
  • She has more books than I have .
  • She has more books than I do .

Rule 2 : Compared things must be parallel.

 Usage : 

  • He likes playing football more than listening to music.

Rule 3 : To compare two things , people , etc. use comparative degree.

Usage : 

  • The two players argued to prove who was better .

Rule 4 : To compare more than two things , people ,etc. use superlative degree.

Usage : 

  • Out of all the students in the class, Praisy is the most popular.

Rule 5: Use the word ‘ else ‘ or ‘ other ‘ to compare one thing or person to the rest of the group.

Usage : 

  • He is taller than any other boy in the class.

Rule 6 : Like vs. As vs. Such as 

Like is used to compare nouns 

Usage : 

  • The Earth, like other planets,spins on an axis .

Rule 7 :‘As’  is used to compare actions

Usage : 

  • A globe spins around an axis , as does the Earth itself.

Rule 8 :‘ Such as ‘ is used for examples

Usage : 

  • I like fruits such as bananas , papayas, and mangoes.

VI) MODIFIERS

A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that functions as an adjective or an adverb to describe a word or a phrase.

Rule 1 : Misplaced Modifier – A misplaced modifier is a word or phrase describing something but not placed next to the word it is supposed to modify / describe .

Usage : 

  • Sam donated his old car to a charity that no longer ran well.( Wrong )
  • Sam donated his old car that no longer ran well to a charity.( Correct)

Rule 2 : Dangling Modifier – When the subject ( noun ) that is being modified by a modifier is missing in a sentence, the modifier dangles with no logical link. Such an error is called a dangling modifier.

Usage : 

  • To order safely from the internet, your credit card should be protected.( Wrong )
  • To order safely from the internet , you should be sure your credit card is protected .( Correct )

Rule 3 : Squinting modifier – A squinting modifier occurs when the adverb modifier is placed inappropriately and conveys a meaning that is not intended.

Usage : 

  • Students who seek their teachers’ advice often can improve their grades.( Wrong)
  • Students who seek their teachers’ advice can often improve their grades.( Correct)
